In Klondike Solitaire, your goal is to move every card onto four suit foundations. Learn the layout first, then follow the same short decision loop each turn. Use this walkthrough alongside the available Klondike Draw 1 game.
Start with the four areas
Use one ordinary deck without jokers. The tableau is the working area; the stock contains undealt cards; the waste holds cards turned from the stock; the foundations are the four finishing piles. A foundation is not an extra storage column.
When dealing by hand, make seven tableau columns containing one through seven cards, with only the exposed end card face up. The remaining cards form the stock. Keep the waste separate so you can see which card is actually available.
Check moves before drawing
Look for an exposed Ace, a move that reveals a hidden card, and a useful place for the waste card. On the tableau, place a red card onto the next higher black rank, or black onto red. An ordered descending alternating-color group can be transferred as a unit.
After uncovering a face-down tableau card, turn it over. You may discover a new option, so inspect the position again before touching the stock. Moving a visible card back and forth without opening anything is not progress.
A worked decision: red 6 onto black 7
Imagine the 6 of hearts is exposed above a hidden card and another column ends in the 7 of clubs. Moving the 6 onto the 7 is legal and uncovers the hidden card. If that hidden card is an Ace, it can begin its own suit foundation.
Suppose the waste shows a black 5 next. It can join the red 6. It cannot join a red 7, because matching opposite colors is not enough: the ranks must differ by exactly one. Follow the visible position, not a memorized sequence of moves.
Use the stock and know when to stop
Draw when the current layout offers no useful move. Draw-one reveals one card per draw; draw-three exposes a group whose top waste card is playable first. Redeal limits vary, so check the instructions of the version you choose.
A win means all cards have reached the foundations. If the allowed stock passes are exhausted and no move changes the position, you may be stuck. Frequently asked questions
Do I need to match suits on the tableau?
No. Standard Klondike tableau building uses opposite colors, not matching suits. Foundations use matching suits.
Can I put any card in an empty column?
Only a King or a legal group beginning with a King in standard Klondike.
